I don't know much about the various JBL speakers and their attendant nomenclature...What's the difference between the "D" and "K" series speakers for instance?

Cliff,
I recently sent a inquiry to Mr. Walker of StereoSteel and he replied saying that the "D" series is an older JBL that is sweeter and lighter than the current model. He was very helpful in his e-mail so you may want to try him at

Cliff, I'm not smart in the speaker dept. but I think "D" "E" or "K" would identify the material and density of said material the cones are made of. Perhaps Jack Stoner can set us straight.

Thanks Kenny but I'm not sure either. The D series was the first ones I came in contact with and I had a Fender Twin with D-120F's in it. I replaced the two 12" with one K-130 15" JBL because the D series had been discontinued. I think the K series had a higher power rating. I think the E series is the current production.
I haven't kept up with JBL since I started using Peavey and the Black Widows. I still have the old D-120F's and use them in my stereo system but I haven't had a desire to go back to the JBL's for steel.

Cliff, you can find out some info here:
E-Series (current):

Discontinued Products (G series, K series):

JBL / Altec General Info & History:

I believe that the F-Series were JBL's sold to Fender as OEM. Possibly, the dust cap designs were modified.

The "D" series magnets were alnico, and the "K" series is ceramic.

Chris,
I think that "M" series was made for awhile
when JBL was attempting to reproduce the
alnico tone of the older "D" series.
I don't believe they're made anymore.
