Can the Black Widow speaker baskets be reconed or is it not economically feasible? I think you stated earlier that the old "spider web", flat magnets will not work with the newer basket assemblies. Is this true? If so, what is different?

Thanks

Hello Darvin,
I don't know what the going rate is on reconing a speaker, but the intention of the replacable basket concept was that you could quickly repair your speaker "on the job". It takes about 15 minutes or less with the proper tools. The U.S. MSRP of the BW 12", 15" and 18" baskets are $65.99, 85.99 and 105.99 respectively.

Due to tooling discrepancies between the Spider magnet and the Super Structure magnet, some latter replacement baskets were not compatable. Some would work and some wouldn't.

I don't know of a company that is reconing these baskets, so I can't compare pricing. But, I would guess that the reconing price would be higher or comparable.

Most re-coners charge $50-$75 for a 12", and $75-$100 for a 15", so you wouldn't be saving much. Now that people are recognizing the value and demand for older speakers, a lot of people are getting into the business on a small scale. The big-time re-coners (like Orange County Speaker) claim that, to do a really good job, you have to have a magnetizer-demagnetizer which costs many thousands of dollars. I just had a couple of speakers re-coned by a local, so I'll let you know shortly how good the "little guys" are!
