I've been offered an even trade, my 73 MSA steel for a 1975 model 36 Bell Brass dobro.
Russ Tkac has the Dobro. He sent pictures, it looks real nice, but it's a metal body and looks like a round neck. What can you guys tell me about this model Dobro? worth the trade? Thanks in advance.

By the way, what brand dobro is this? I couldn't find it on Elderly instruments.

Terry-you need to backtrack a bit and give us some info. We went through an extensive thread recently advising you on what to look for to get started on the dobro. Did you place that order for a Goldtone yet, and have you been bitten by the resonator guitar bug and you are looking into this one as well?

It sounds like it is an actual OMI Dobro, built in Southern California.

If you haven't ordered the Goldtone, and you are thinking you might do the trade and use this lap style with a nut extender-then don't do it.

Assuming you want to play country/bluegrass stuff, this metal bodied Dobro is not the ticket.

Nice guitar for bottleneck playing, or for playing regular fretted style with fingers (think Mark Knopfler playing the Dire Straits song "Romeo and Juliet"), and though it certainly CAN be converted to lap style, a metal-bodied Dobro isn't the first choice for lap country and bluegrass.

Of course, Terry, you may know all of this already-or you may not.

As far as being worth the trade for a '73 MSA-can't help you there, but I like those metal Dobros.

Well, that's what I needed to know Mark. I had to cancel my order for the Goldtone because the guy that bought my steel sent me a check that the bank wouldn't cash.
So I thought of trading my steel for a dobro, but i've decided not to do that either. Maybe it ain't meant for me to play dobro. Thanks

This is an OMI Dobro. I have a Model 36 that is identical to Russ Tkac's guitar except that mine is a square neck. A Model 36 Dobro is made of bell brass and is a genuine Dobro manufactured by the Dopyera brothers. I am told that Gibson will introduce this in the 1st quarter of 2007 and rumour has it that suggested list price is approximately $4000. If Gibson's version of a Model 36 is no better that their other Dobro copies, you best snatch the OMI guitar before some one else gets it. That is, if you really want a genuine Dobro. Put an extension nut on this guitar and you'll have the best of two worlds.

That sounds like an awful lot of dough for the new model 36 that is rumored to come out! But then Gibson's prices have gone through the roof in recent years.

It's about $1200 street price for their Hound Dog model these days. Gibson, give me a break! I think only 2-3 years ago you could get one for about $750.

Gibson's Phil Leadbetter maple model could be had for about $1600 about 3 years ago-now the street price is ballpark $2200. Pretty darned cocky, if you ask me.

An extension nut on an OMI Dobro 36 "and you'll have the best of two worlds?"

I'd sure like you to elaborate on that one, Robert.

Well, if I can ever sell my steel, I want a wood body dobro. I just don't like the looks of the metal body dobros. I'll probly go with the Goldtone Mahogany or Maple body.
That is IF I ever sell my steel.

That is one pretty MSA. I'm in a "no buy" period or I would surely consider it!
