I apologize for posting this in a musical category, but does anyone out there have any recommendations for musical and non-musical Hawaiian history, culture, and art books? I have Lorene Ruymar's book and plan to get Andy Volk's for steel guitar history, but I'm more interested in the "bigger picture".
Thanks for any help.

The granddaddy of them all is "Hawaiian Music and Musicians" published in 1979 by the University of Hawaii Press and edited by George S. Kanahele.

"HAWAIIAN MUSIC and MUSICIANS" is now considered to be a rare find. If you can obtain a copy, it is chock full of great information ! Check out page 50...what a great honor. Another rare book is Tony Todero's "GOLDEN YEARS OF HAWAIIAN ENTERTAINMENT" which was book one of many planned editions. Unfortunately Tony passed away suddenly and his goal was never achieved. However this edition is a "must have" if you can ever find a copy. It consists 90% of great pictures, 10% text.
Another bit of rare reading is "SWEET LEILANI" ... the bio of Harry Owens along with Hilo Hattie, (Clara Inter).[This message was edited by George Keoki Lake on 03 November 2006 at 03:10 PM.] |

Since this doesn't relate to lap steel, I'm moving it to Music from No Peddlers.

Matt : A must read for the "bigger Picture" must include --"SHOAL OF TIME",
"a history of the Hawaiian Islands",
by GAVIN DAWS. My Wife lived in the Islands for many years, and knows,Loves, and teaches the culture, language, and is a well respected Hula Instructor. This book is the most complete we have ever read on Hawaii. Mahlo Nui Loa,for asking. Aloha. |

Thank you all for the recommendations. I'm in the middle of one now that has lots of pictures and historical illustrations that are archived at the Bishop Museum. I bought it at Hilo Hattie (forgive me for being the stereotypical haole tourist!) and it's titled "Hawai'i Looking Back - An Illustrated History of the Islands". It discusses the history and "development" of the islands dating back from the Captain Cook era to the turn of the 21st Century. Seeing the pictures with the text makes it a fascinating read.
