I would guess if it was recorded in New York it might be Romeo Penque or King Curtis.
You talking about the Ben E. King version? |

If it was on Atlantic(and I think it was),it WAS probably King Curtis...he did an awful lot of sessions on that label.

Check out the version on "The Nashville Bar Association" album. I forgot which of the guys did it but it might be Russ Hicks. It makes a great steel instrumental....JH in Va.

| Listen to Benard Purdy's drum ride on the Memphis Soul Stew song that King does. It will knock your hat in the creek. I saw this black cat one time on the old Jackie Gleason show take a sax solo that just blew everyone away. Jackie Gleason was really taken by it and said, "Mr. King Curtis ladies and gentlemen". Such a great talent and such a waste. Knifed in an alley. Such a waste. |

Yep, it was King Curtis. What a beautiful musician, and a fantastic player of just about anything with a reed.
Hell, he'd probably have been a killer oboe or bassoon player if he'd been asked to play either one! |
