I understand that the Stringmasters are painted with High Gloss Nitrocellulose Lacquer. I am trying to restore a triple neck and have had no luck in locating this item from any of our numerous paint stores here in Portland, Oregon. Does anyone know where to buy this stuff? It is the almond or blonde finish at present and I want to refinish it in high gloss black. The tuner pans and all of the chrome parts are being refinished in polished brass. This of course isn't original however I am hoping the combination of colors will look real sharp. STEVE

Guitar ReRanch http://www.flash.net/~guitars/ also sells nitro-lacquer. They carry black as well as a variety of classic Fender colors.

I refinished a guitar using their aerosol spray cans and was very pleased with the results. The website has pretty complete instructions on the steps involved in doing a good refinishing job, so you should read that if you've never refinished a guitar before. And be VERY CAREFUL! It's highly toxic, make sure you have proper ventilation and a mask.

If you want to buy nitro locally you can try Sherwin Williams they will even mix colors, hardware stores have Parks brand which works fine. There are numerous good brands Rudd, Gaurdsman, Kelly moore. You have to get it at a place thats geard towards cabinets not housepaint and usually located in an industrial area.

Doen't refinishing these just kill the value? Correct me if I'm wrong but I just can't see doing this unless the guitar has been drug behind a truck.

I looked at your steel on your site and must admit that it is beautiful! Is that a 22 1/2 " scale? Don't get me wrong, I am not telling anyone not to refinish one. If you never plan to sell it that's great. I am lucky that mine only has two or three chips on the back side (darn slippery bars) If I had to I would probably want to do it also. I just remember the 65 fender strat my friend had in school and painted it blue to match something. Later after he didn't want it anymore he couldn't get 100 bucks for it.
