I was listening to some of my Charlie Rich "records" and I forgot how much the steel was used in his music. Who played it? Man, he did some great tunes.

Freaky.......there's a Charlie Rich record spinning on my turntable right at this minute........."Every Time You Touch Me". I was just thinking about how nice Pete Drake's steel sounds.

I did a gig a few years back where we opened for Freddie Fender, Augie Meyers, and Charlie Rich Jr. Junior had some tapes of his Dad, just jamming on piano. Some incredible stuff. I never knew he was such a keyboard virtuoso until I heard that.

I had the pleasure of working with Charlie on the road for several years (during the 70's) and so I got to play Pete's stuff at every gig. Gave me a whole new appreciation for his approach.

By the way, Charlie was a remarkable piano player. He loved Oscar Peterson (among others) and wasn't a cheap immitation of that style. The horn players in his band at that time were all jazz and R&B freaks and Charlie would absolutely floor them and everyone else in the band when he'd take on that musical personality. His son Alan was doing his own band at the time and he and his bass player (Michael Rhodes) came along on a handful of gigs (he played keys also). Alan also had an incredible sense of music and an amazing right hand. Of course, some of you know Michael Rhodes as one of The Players now...great musician.

Hey Mike, thanks for sharing those experiences. Saw him in Dallas and marvelled at his musical capability. You guys were really tight.

I heard that Alan Rich played the piano without using his thumbs.
