I just wanted to put my two cents worth in about Mike's book on music theory. I just got it yesterday, and I can see this book is what I've been needing to help me understand music theory. After all the posts I've read here on the forum about how much steel players need to learn music theory, and how much it will help their playing and their abillity to understand what their playing, I decided I was goin to do my best to learn as much as possible about music theory.
Mike's book is easy to understand(something that really helps my 55 yr old mind), and it covers all you need to know about music, and music theory. Mike writes everything in easy to understand terms. And if I can understand it, beleive me, anyone can. He gives examples in music notation, and examples of scales using the picture of a keyboard. Finally, after all the web-surfing I've done trying to find info on music theory, I've found all I need to know in Mike's book. If your wanting to learn music theory, then I highly recomend Mike Perlowin's book (music Theory In The Real World). And at a price anybody can afford. Thanks a bunch Mike.

Mike has a good command of the language and puts the basic necessities of theory out in a way that anyone with enough intelligence to play steel guitar could certainly understand.

It's a real asset and a worthy addition to the literature of music, IMHO.

I recommend the book to my students, telling them "you can pay me 50 bucks an hour to write this stuff down on a blackboard for you and lecture, or you can get this book and understand it in a few hours of concentrated reading."

Once again I'd like to mention that I've written a special supplement for the E9 tuning, with many examples of from the book tabbed out.

I will E-mail the file of the supplement for free to any forum member who wants it.

(Note- some people have had trouble opening it or seeing all the graphics, so some of you might have to copy the file to a disk and take it to a place like Kinkos.)

Jay, the book (entitled "Music theory In the Real World, A practical Guide For today's Musicians") is published by Mel Bay publications and is available wherever Mel Bay books are sold. This includes your local music store, on line stores like Barnes and Nobel, and Scottys.

I prefer that people buy them from Scotty. He deserves the support of the entire steel guitar community.
