Yeah. I heard a discussion of this on WNYC, John Shaefer's Soundcheck, last week. It was one of those eureka finds, buried in some Library of Congress archives. This is really exciting but I have to say that the tiny bit I heard just didn't sound as compelling as the Five Spot stuff and the '57 studio sessions. Man--I love this kind of story. Did you hear about the Bird stuff that was found by some record collector? Another holy grail thing. |

They are still discovering Vivaldi operas. I guess there is a lot of music out there gathering dust that has simply not been heard by someone who would recognize its value. |

EBB, I'm wondering:
.
.
.
By "also on this date", I assume you mean different artists playing other sets.
If that's the case, I'd guess that by "bilie" you mean billie holiday. And Ray would be...Ray Charles???
Hmmm...
Or maybe that's Ray Brown, and billy another player. (Ehhh...probly not).
Just curious. |

Dave---there was a piece about it in the Sunday NY Times like maybe a couple of months ago. A pretty recent discovery of a high quality recording of a concert at NY Town Hall, 1945, Bird & Diz, Roach & Haig. This is right around Massey Hall time, I believe. Here:
The CD
A Review I just pulled off of Google
For some reason I don't have it yet.
I guess because it's got to be garbage since it has no steel (I know that for a fact because I read the Forum!)
I think I gotta have it.
-----BTW, the context of the Monk/Trane thing was that it was a fundraiser concert and the lineup included all those artists in the list. Apparently recordings of Billie Holiday's set have not been found.[This message was edited by Jon Light on 06 October 2005 at 12:53 PM.] |
