The sound of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was everywhere in the 1960s ... from TV commercials, the Dating Game to everyone's parent's record collection. I recently picked up a copy of the 40th anniversary CD of Whipped Cream & Other Delights - not 'cause I think it's great music but 'cause it reminds me of my childhood ... both the music that cover art with a model covered in whipped cream ... THAT definitely registered on my emerging 9-year old libido! The TJB actually played some pretty classy, well arranged pop music on listening again after 35 + years or so. They were not a band per se but crack LA studio players like John Pisano, Hal Blaine and Carol Kaye. What really interested me was that Herb Alpert happened on the signature Marachi trumpet sound by overdubbing his second trumpet parts slightly off intonation on purpose ... and also unwittingly inventing the Roland Jazz Chorus sound. |

......"second trumpet parts slightly off intonation on purpose "......
Also the same for recordings by Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash. It was kind of an epidemic in that era.

I've always really liked the music of Herb Alpert and TTB. It's funny how little it's been heard anymore especially with the popularity of 60's music over the last few decades. In my view, that Herb Alpert music is about as much of a 60's pop icon as you can get. |

I love it all!!
Also,'The Bob Crewe Generation' and
their song "Music to Watch Girls By".
It's like Herb Alpert meets James Bond.

They all owed a debt to Esquivel, IMHO. |

Andy, even though the TJB included studio musicians like John Pisano and Nick Ceroli, they were indeed a "real" band. The core group was the same, whether touring or recording. Some of the guys in the band (including Pisano) also wrote some of their tunes. Bob Edmondson, played trombone in the band and did a lot of great comedy on stage. If you ever saw them live, they put on a very good show, and were excellent musicians. Herb Alpert treated the TJB extremely well and gave them a large monetary gift when the band stopped touring. |

The "Whipped Cream" cover!
Did you know that the model was actually pregnant. Look at the cover again and you will see. |

I just saw on Herb Alperts website that he has sold 70 million records worldwide. WOW, I never had any idea the TJB was so popular. I used to blow a few notes on a trumpet, I need to get some of this old stuff out and give it another listen.

I only have a few of "The Tijuana Brass" albums, but I have just about all of the ones by "The Baja Marimba Band".
I even have the Christmass album they did.
One of my all time favorite bands
