I'd read somewhere on the Forum recently that it's not unheard of for radio stations to pull some technical tricks to shorten the playtime of songs so they can fit in more commercials. Well, I just did an experiment on the local country station. They started playing a song that I've got on my computer (from iTunes) and I decided to try to line up the playback of my version and their version. When I got them sync'd up, sure enough, the version on the radio was slightly higher in pitch and gradually got further and further ahead of the version playing on my Mac. One can't blame the Mac playback speed either; digital music playback speed is accurate to something like 0.001% these days even in cheap players. The station's faster playback must be intentional.
I was kinda disappointed. But it did prove to me the practice exists.

i never knew that Bill...interesting, but it figures, and sure doesn't surprise me either.By the time they get done talking over the intros, and endings of songs, to bring you the latest sports scores..it don't leave much left...

In the 60's, AM radio advertised "More Music per Hour". I think it was either Cousin' Brucie on 770 WABC in NYC or Joey Reynolds on WKBW, or Larry Lujack on WCFL. This trick has been goin' on a long time... |

I cut my teeth listening to Joey Reynolds on WKBW. (Bud Balloo, Sandy Beach... on "KB radio".) Not sure I recall "more music per hour", but it may have come through them.
Still, it's disappointing they'd tweak the playback, even by just spinning the platters a touch faster. But then, they process the daylights out of the audio for broadcast anyway, so what's a little change in pitch/tempo? Nowadays, they can even speed up the playback without changing the pitch if they really want to. Sigh.
