I have a gig tomorrow on guitar where the client has requested songs of the 30's and 40's. I figure I should have a few tunes ready, tunes by Cole Porter, Rogers/Hart, Jerome Kern, Jobim, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, etc. come to mind. Does anyone have any tune suggestions?

| Louis Jordan wrote and recorded tons of great stuff for Decca - Choo Cho Ch' Boogie, Ain't Nobody But Us Chickens, Caldonia, Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying, Saturday Night Fish Fry, Jack You Dead, Beware, Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby, the list goes on and on. An observation....
Surprisingly, most of the songs listed in the above posts were prominent on western-swing dance playlists of the 1950's.....along with Bob Wills arrangements.
Many of the horn players, drummers, bass, piano and guitarists who comprised the western swing groups of the 1950's were refugees from the demise of the big-band era of the 1940's whose popularity had diminished. They were mixing jazz and Wills arrangements. "Asleep At The Wheel" mirrows the style of that era.

All great songs and you know they work with steel 
A couple of my personal favorites are Moonglow, Mood Indigo and Sophisticated Lady. I also like some of the 'newer' Mancini/Mercer tunes which wouldn't have been in the set those days. |
