Just won the Grammy for the best country record. So cool. Never got any airplay on country radio. I only heard it on college FM.
She was hilarious accepting. |

I like it.
Nice to see some one who ain't a spring chicken,
not being a afraid to take chances and reinvent themselves,
while having fun
And THEN get properly rewarded and aclaimed for it.
Very Cool. |

I give her credit for embracing the younger generation. I thought the kiss was pretty inapropriate. Not necessary. |

Hey Loretta, Love you more than my Irish setter................
I must admit, I listend to Van Lear Rose a few times all the way through and although its not what I expected, There are a couple of Country cuts and all in all I thought it was not bad. I was glad to see Loretta get a little recognition. She certinly deserves it.......Buy you brand new overalls if you'll only come back home.....

She's supposed to appear at St. Bonaventure University next month. Maybe go check it out. Visited Van Lear (Butcher Holler, Paintsville, Ky) last summer, doesn't look geographically any different than some holler's around here. |

Never fails to amaze me when people who claim to like and/or respect an artist turn around and instead of giving them the benefit of the doubt---maybe Loretta just plain enjoyed herself and did this project because it's what she wanted to do!!--instead, they accuse her of selling out, whoring herself, being desperate, whatever. It's downright disrespectful to a person who these people claim to admire. Friends like these I sure as hell don't need.
I haven't heard more than a sound clip so I have no comment on the music but I couldn't be more pleased for Loretta Lynn for the success of this record and for finding new fans in a time when her old ones wish she would just go away. |

I had the privilege of playing bass in House band at the Horseshoe Tavarn in the sixties and backed her up for a week. She was an absolute sweetheart. She played great rhythm, sang well, and had zero attitude.
I wish her all the best. |

That gal has something a lot of newcomers don't have. She's real, and loves to still get out there and entertain. Maybe the college crowd isn't so biased and sees her for what she is. |

Country music is capable of progressing, you know. She did something innovative. God bless her for it.

I didn't hear anybody complain about the Johnny Cash "American Recordings" projects, I get the sense that this was a similar move by Loretta. I'm with her, what's in country music these days doesn't feel rootsy at all - this does. I recently started playing steel with a bunch of guys young enough to be my kids (two of them are the kids of two of my friends), and they know authentic roots when they hear it. No, it's not 60s - 80s Nashville flash, but that doesn't make it any less real music, or real country music, at that. A lot of people are put off by the Nudie suits and the flashy schtick {not me, I love 'em, but in this band, I leave the fancy threads at home }. But these guys want to hear real music by real musicians, not sampled dance-mix techno, karaoke, or worse. Consider this a very good sign for roots and country music, let's hope it catches on in a more widespread way. Just my opinion. |

Yeah like this will re-invent her and cause a rush to the record shops. |
Van Lear Rose sold more copy's in it's first month than ANY of Loretta's other albums ever have.
So YES it did re-invent her and cause a rush to the record shops!

She is not the first to try something else when the popularity and talent wane. |
Seems to me that she has plenty of talent and popularity. This was the first album that she wrote every song on and she sang 'em just like she sang back in the '60's.
As for her popularity, 60 minutes did a story on her last week. They said she was the only 70 year old Great grand mother to have a video on MTV.
I think it was great that she won a couple of grammy's. She deserves them. |

I am glad for Loretta and I wish her more success. I just don't like Jack White or his band. I have one of thier C.D.'s. It was horrible.

If songwriters and performing artists worried about being accepted by the masses nothing would ever get done.
Thankfully artists like Loretta continue to write and perform from the heart. That is way better than selling out by writing and performing Nashville "hits" that conform to the record company exec's fad formula of the week.
I have a lot of respect for Loretta even though I may not buy this particular record.

What if someone would record a new backing track, early 60's style, to the "Van Lear Rose" CD. The songs are good, Loretta's singing is great - it's just the production that stinks!
Why do all these fancy producers have to make it THEIR record instead of the artist's? Daniel Lanois ruined one for Emmylou, and the list goes on... |

Per,
I don`t think that the producers want to make the records "theirs", but they are hired because they indeed have a special style. The Emmylou CD e.g. is one of her best works IMO. If you want Lanois, you get him. Same for Albini, Steinman and a lot of the other great producers. I don`t thinks there is something wrong with that...
The Loretta CD on the other hand, well. The steel is so bad that I hardly can listen to it, but there are some really great tunes on it I think...

Wow, I musta' missed something. I've never even heard this Van Gogh Rose thing! I liked Loretta's early stuff. After she got real famous, she started singin' with an overly-accentuated hillbilly accent (which wasn't there on her early recordings). It's still hard listening to her and Crystal Gayle, and thinkin' they're even related, let alone, sisters.
To her credit, she's an icon, and one of the true old-timer's left around. I'd rather see Loretta win than some young sex-symbol phoney-baloney.
At any rate, she still looks country!

Well deserved award, but I bet the kids that heard the CD because of the White Stripes connection were more shocked than any country fans. |
