Does anybody make an 8 string square neck Dobro or resonator type guitar? I'm kinda interested in one.

I used to have an 8 string dobro. It was an O.M.I. from the early 80's. These are not that rare and pop up from time to time. I don't know if these are made by Dobro anymore. They are now owned by Gibson. I eventually traded it in on a regular six string (model 27)as I was more interested in bluegrass at the time. I then moved on to an 8 string Fender deluxe which is where I was headed all along. I think Mike Auldridge has a custom 8 string. He plays some awesome stuff on his album 8 String Swing and Stompin' at the Savoy which is on one of the Seldom Scene records.

Paul Beard makes an 8 string I believe. It's shown on his website. Ted Smith of Melobar made an 8 string "Melobro" for me which is a great sounding resophonic guitar made of fiberglass. You can check out his website also.

I own a Paul Beard 8 string mahogany that I tune to G6. A great guitar.
There are some OMI instruments floating around. I don't think these command a hefty price tag as the demand was relatively low.
I see on the RESOGUIT list where Ivan Guernsey is building an 8 string for Mike A. I believe that Mike currently has several Rudy Jones 8 strings that he plays in a variety of tunings.
I'm sure that Mike will correct me if I am off base here.

I have an OMI Dobro 8 string Chrome plated brass that I bought new in late '70 or early '80s from Eddie Martin Music. Eddie was in business at the time with Josh Graves in La Belle, FL. I haven't played it in years and would consider selling it. If you ever watched the Barbara Mandrell show, she played a similar guitar except hers was a 6.

| Mike Auldridge has a magnificent album "8 String Swing" and plays an 8 string dobro. He was a student of Buddy Charleton and plays several Charleton instrumentals on the album. |
