David Grisiman's label is re-issuing one of the all-time classic mandolin records. This is an exceptional recording by legendary musicians. Tiny & Jethro playing Dizzy's "Groovin' High" - what's not to love? This one's been out-of-print since the 80's. Now if they'd only reissue Andy Statman's "Flatbush Waltz ...
Tiny Moore & Jethro Burns - Back To Back

i can't wait for it to get into the stores! i bought the lp the moment that it came out. everybody on that record just plays so soulfully, it's "school" for any musician. and the outtakes cd should be great, too. neither tiny or jethro ever played the same thing twice.
as far as flatbush waltz, i emailed rounder records about reissueing it, but i guess that they've gotten too big to respond to their customers. i can't wait for andy's new mandolin album to come out.

I've also had that record album since day one. My hat is off to David Grisman who engineered this summit recording. Their rendition of Lester Young's "Tickle Toe" is nothing short of amazing. |

Me too, Howard. Jethro was fantastic with that driving freight train swing he had but, IMHO, Tiny Moore's ideas were even MORE musically sophisticated and harmonicaly advanced. Both of them together was a moment in time never to be repeated. It was like putting Django and Charlie Christian on the same record. Drummer Shelly Mann played brushes on a newspaper-covered suitcase!! Now that's a musican who not only knows who he is and how to contribute but has a good sense of humor too. I'll look forward to hearing the alternate takes. |
