I've recently had a desire to play my mandolin more - and I'm not really sure why. Regardless, I have been having so much fun with the radically "alternate" mandolin tuning C# Minor (G#G#-C#C#-G#B-C#E).

The song I have been working on, "My Last Days On Earth", was composed with this tuning by Bill Monroe in his later years. I've been so moved by it that I thought I would share it with forum. I'm attaching a link to a version of the song performed by The Nashville Mandolin Esemble. The group was formed by Mandolin virtuoso, Butch Baldassari who also plays the lead on this particular cut.

I realize this may not be for everybody, but you mandolin lovers should really enjoy it.

Respectfully,
Dave Burr

DLD,

Have you ever experimented with this tuning (C# Minor)? I'd be curious to hear your or others thoughts on it who are familiar with it. It seems to lend itself well to haunting melodies.

Not that tuning specifically,
but I had tuned the mandolin to a different note for each string.
Like Jimmy Bryant's Stratosphere guitar.

I will give it a try some time.
