Some of you may not be familiar w/ the name,Mack Vickery, but you'll certainly be familiar w/ some of the songs he wrote. He was a heluva performer himself! His entertaining on stage would make some of these "entertainers" of today look like amateurs. His partnership w/ "Elmer Fuddpucker" was classic. Their show, albeit "suggestive",was some of the funniest material you ever heard. He will be missed in "Music City". Click & read, for more insight on this ENTERTAINER!

If I'm not mistaken Mack Vickery and Wayne Kemp co-wrote quite a few songs, including "The Fireman"

He will be sadly missed. What a great writer he was - songs like "Who'll Turn Out The Lights In Your World Tonight", "The Jamestown Ferry", "The Fireman" will stand.

Sad news!

Kind Regards, Walter

By the way Macks version of the Fireman is on a recent writers tribute album to George Strait.

If I'm not mistaken, Mack co-wrote several songs with another good song writer by the name of Wayne Kemp. I asked on the "Forum" several years ago about him, but no one seemed to know what happened to him. Anyone? Didn't mean to drift off topic.

I did the demo session on "The Fireman", at the Sony building on Music row in Nashville, it was produced by Buddy Killan, president of the company at the time. He was very hacked at Mack because he (Mack) didn't have the song completed when he came to the session. Dave Kirby, Bunky Kiels, myself and Karl Himmel (drs.)were on the session and had to help him finish the song. I personally didn't like the song and was of little help, Dave was the most help on fixing the lyrics to "The Fireman". When it became a hit a couple of years later, I couldn't believe it! I still don't think much of it, but then again, "Achy Breaky Heart" wasn't a favorite of mine either!
Wayne Kemp wasn't in the studio on this particular day, but he could have possibly helped Mack put together what little was finished before "session day". Who knows. But I don't think Wayne got credit for any of it if he did help. Not to diminish Wayne's great talent, he has many "Hits" to be proud of himself. This pack of writers were a crazy bunch of wonderful guys.

Ray,

I checked my record database - yes, Mack Vickery is often teamed up with Wayne Kemp, also with Bobby Borchers as songwriters. Looks like they made a successful team!

Kind Regards, Walter

I don't mean to drift from the topic either, but I was lucky enough to work quite a few times with Wayne. He talked about Mack Vickery a lot and very highly of him. The small promotion co. that I am a part of talked about booking Mack Vickery several times but never got around to it. Sorry now that we didn't. In my guestamation if you would have had Mack Vickery and Wayne Kemp on the same show you would have one of the absolute best traditional country music shows money could buy, Doyle

Doyle, I had the pleasure of working with Wayne several times in the early "70's" also. I still have two autographed pictures of him from back then that I have hanging up. Good singer and entertainer. Ray

Ray, the last I heard, Wayne was still living in Hendersonville, not very far from Lynn Ousley. I think he had some health problems. I would appreciate any information, Doyle
