Hi,
I've realised I don't really like much modern country but I DO like the 40's/50's stuff I know (which isn't much). I've got plenty of Hank Williams, some Hank Snow, Eddy Arnold (which I like up to the point where he gets too Bing Crosby), Lefty Frizzell and some Ray Price on the way. My question is, where next? I know this is probably bread & butter to most of you so all recommendations gratefully accepted.
Basically what I like is good old-fashioned country with a smallish band and plenty of steel if possible.
Thanks,
Matt

Let's not forget the ladies:
Jean Sheppard
Kitty Wells
Goldie Hill
June Carter
Jan Howard
June Webb
The Davis Sisters
Skeeter Davis
Early Patsy Cline for small band
Later Patsy for lush orchestrtions
Connie Smith ('60's)
Loretta Lynn('60's)
and of course when you get around to the '60's there's the Bakersfield sound:
Buck Owens & His Buckaroos
Kay Adams
Tommy Collins (50's too)
Merle Haggard & His Strangers

If I may add to this highly estimable list, IMHO the Joe Carson compilation "Hillbilly Band from Mars" on Bear Family is an absolute must-have disc

Hey Larry,
I believe you overlooked Laney Hicks in your post, anyone know who plays steel on her recordings. He plays pretty good and probably will make a pro-player if he keeps playing.

Wayne....I'm not sure who plays steel for her but the last guy I saw showed up for the gig and didn't even bring a guitar....had this little bag with some picks in it and said, " I'm ready "....furthermore, she's had the same steel man for 25 years....I'd say it's working purty (that's Oklahoma for pretty) good for 'em....just a word of warning though...she has recently had another fella on one cut of her new C D....this guy seems to be able to handle his instrument purty good and even wrote the melody. |

Matt, for a radio station to listen to right now check out the MUSIC post on this page. Robert Hays has a post on the best radio station I've heard in years and you can listen to it on your computer. Doyle |
