Jim is a record producer. Janice, I am glad to see Kris get in. He deserves it. Kris is one of the greatest songwriters country music ever had.

I think Kris is a great songwriter, and should be honored for his accomplishments. But as was posted earlier, to omit Connie Smith, Jean Shepard, and many more that are to numerous to mention is absurd!!!

Hey Retcop, Did you ever hear Harlan Howard sing? Wow! Kris deserves it. I agree with your choices by the way, but look how long it took to put Hag and Ray Price in. They will get there eventually. Maybe like in the case of Tammy and Conway they will go in sooner. Seems like if someone dies they are a shoe-in. By the way I would also like to see Hank Jr. and Copas in there too. |

How about cause he's had a pile of albums in the charts at one time. Or how about cause he has made entertainer of the year three years in a row. Or maybe his concerts continue to sell out even though he can't get played on radio. What is wrong with Hank Jr.? nothing. He has a song in the charts now. When was the last time J Shepard had a song in the charts? 1974 I think. Yet Hank continues to chart. I think he is ready. Yet it seems like once again, if it don't twang they don't get the honor. Get with the times man.
Oh yeah and Leigh, when your career spans 40 some years, lets talk.

Craig, get ready to talk. I worked with Leigh back in the 70's. He is one of the best singers I know, has several records to his credit, and has certainly been in the business for way more than 40 years. |

Jim, That's cool with me. So that puts him on the same bubble as Hank, I guess. Millions of records sold, Videos, Awards shows involving getting and handing out awards. Anybody can go to Nashville and for an amount of money make a record. I know people up here that have done that. Only thing is most have had no success. I have been in the business for 35 years and don't ever recall seeing Mr. Howell's name on a chart or awards show. If it has been I stand corrected and I am greatly sorry. The question was asked why Hank Jr? Because of Daddy? No because of his accomplishments. He has made a name for himself above and beyond his Daddy's name. If all it took was Hank Sr.'s name to be a star then Jett should be too. But, alas, this hasn't happened. The time is coming when a lot of the artists from the last 20 years or so are going to make the Hall Of Fame. A lot of the people with steel trap minds are not going to like it, because they didn't twang enough, or weren't country enough. People are put in the Hall because of their input into country music. Not because they can sing a nightful of shuffles thru their nose. And before I get flamed, I'll metion that Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, Connie Smith, and Johnny Bush rank among my favorites. But my mind isn't closed enough not to like Hank, Kris, Willie, Waylon, Jerry Jeff, or David Allen Coe. Nuff said. |

Craig, You should have taken a notice that Leigh put the smiley blinking after his statement. He was busting you..Leigh is not only a great singer and I emphasis is (as in still). Although retired he is working on his own recordings lately and I feel priveleged he took the time to mail me copies. Plus I never once in all the years I have known him put anyone down. I also feel that Hank Jr.has had a great career and still does.He will make it sooner than later but why exclude those that at one time were top artist and need to be inducted while the people who knew them can visit the history they were part of. By the way leigh was on Nashvilles LiL Darlin records the same time Aubrey Mayhew had another up and comer by the name of Donnie Litel (spelling not positive). His cuts have the great sound of Lloyd Green and Hal Rugg all over them. One thing that does surprise me is that Jimmy Smith is so old.

Craig is right, at least in the respect that us old folks are gonna see some people going in various Halls of Fame that we feel don't belong. What if, say, 20 years from now, Kid Rock goes in? Will the Robert Randolph fans complain? When Barry Bonds goes in the baseball Hall, is anybody gonna mention that he was on steroids? They haven't kicked O.J. out, nor have they let Pete Rose in--still, both great PLAYERS of their individual sports, just gamblers and wife-killers on the side---
Few songwriters have written as many standards as Kristofferson. Don't know as much about Fogelsong, being's how my playing has been done outside the realm of the big-time Nashville scene, and I don't know squat about producers Halls of Fame are for fans, more than the inductees. There's been a documentary about Waylon being shown (again!!) where he talks about not going, when HE was inducted. And, sad to say, most folks only make it to the HOF, AFTER their prime years, or they're dead, or, uh, both...
So start your OWN Hall of Fame! Put whoever you want to in it, and ignore record sales, touchdowns scored, runs hit, tickets sold---just admit 'em based on YOUR criteria. Then laugh at the nobodies who didn't make it![This message was edited by Stephen Gambrell on 03 September 2004 at 12:55 PM.] |
