Has anyone heard the Western Swing version of the tune that's currently the background music for a Suzuki commercial? Who's doing it? Good stuff IMHO. |

The song "Route 66" is on one of my AATW albums, WHEELIN' and DEALIN',which is a vinyl, but it's probably on a CD as well!

One of the absolute classic standards of all time..Fits in all venues..never misses...
I am not stating that I am any expert on this song but it has been in my "set list" since 1964 or so..and I still do it on every gig..go figure..
Written by Bobby Troup..way back, 50's or so...
Rock, Blues, Country, Swing, Jazz..
Mick Jagger brought it back to life when the Stones came to the USA with their first album in the early 60's..I think he probably can be credited as the one who made this tune timeless..
"Let me hear you say yeh "....
I get a kick out of playing with some folks who call this tune and ask me if I ever heard it before..like it is a new song.
This song has some roots for sure..
Many great arrangements out there..Ray Bensons is one of them..

Yes, that's Asleep At The Wheel on the commercial with Ray Benson singing. It's not the original AATW recording though.
The original, which, was on the Wheelin' And Dealin' album from the '70's, had Leroy Preston doing the vocals.

I'm probably wrong about this, but didn't Nat King Cole have a hit with it back in his piano trio days? And, if memory serves, the Stones version was a cover of Chuck Berry's cover of it. [This message was edited by Dave Birkett on 13 January 2004 at 09:47 AM.] |

According to the AATW web site, Big Jim Murphy played the steel part on this Route 66, but I've been wrong before! |

I just saw 3 AATW shows last week with Big Jim Murphy on steel. When I saw the ad afterwards, I was certain it sounded like him. Thanks for confirming my hunch!
