I just heard that the Texas House of Representatives have designated Ray Benson the 2004 Texas State Musician.
Not bad for a guitar picker from Phily!

I first met Ray many years ago near California when I was working for Judy Lynn. He was TALL, skinny, BIG OL" DEEP VOICE, and it was said he'd probably never make it in 'country music'. Well... they be a oblivious differnce in 'Western Swing', huh.

Congrats Ray

On behalf of the City of Philadelphia, I'd like to take this opportunity to say, "Ah-haaaaaah!"

Jim, as a Philly native, I say, "Yo!"

I think the correct terminology when discussing both Philly AND Western Swing is
"Yippie-yi-
YO!! Adrienne"

Nice little article. Asleep at the Wheel was one of the reasons I dragged my wife to Austin in the late 70's.

I knew about the 2004 musician honor a couple months ago.
As for the article and the album review the Chronicle actuly got it right.

I also concur with Jim Caligiury that Ray's album does not quite hit the mark.

However the Susie Boggus album could be my pick of the year.
