The 8:30 show was fantastic-sure do wish it had been the televised segment.
First, Donna Hammitt did her usual excellent job backing Bill. Jean Shepard did a super job on "Together Again", with Dave Robbins getting to shine on the steel break. Wish she would do a CD of Bakersfield material with Dave on steel. Next, Connie does "I'll Come Running" with Johnny outstanding on the break & backup-this is one of my all-time favorite songs because of the steel break. They also did " Key's In The Mailbox"-super vocals & steel! I look forward each week to getting to possibly hear Jean & Dave and Connie & Johnny Friday & Saturday and to hear them both on the same show-it just dosen't get any better for me, unless their set lasted a coupld of hours!! Jesse McRenolds did good bluegrass and his great crosspicking on mandolin. One of the best shows in a long while-hope lots of you had it tuned in. |

Suzy Bogguss, on last nite's show, was a real breath of fresh air. Here was an artist that actually stepped back to let the musicians in her band shine during her songs! Imagine that...someone who thinks of musicians as more than "hired hands". Most show producers have little idea how many in the audience are "musician fans", just as much as they are "singer fans".
Ernest Tubb darn well knew, though, didn't he? |
