Les Paul himself said the secret was low impedence pickups, but I don't think Jim Hall or Herb Ellis, for instance, went that route. They use hollowbody Gibsons with flatwound strings and, mostly, the neck pickup with most of the treble rolled off. Some jazz guitars don't even have a bridge pickup. A solid guitar with lighter strings might have more sustain.
Now Ed Bickert gets "that sound" out of a Telecaster. Go figure. I'd guess he uses the neck pickup with the treble rolled off, though. |
