Congradulations to Lloyd Maines producer and Steel Guitarist who produced the Dixie Chicks Grammy winning album 'Home'.
It was great to see Lloyd out there getting the award with the girls and thanking the musicians and studios. He is a class act and I hope he gets more recognition than he recieves now. Way to go.
So far I think the performances at the grammys have been very good. It seems that finally the music is taking over instead of fashion. Most of the performances so far have been excellent. Simon and Garfunkel, Norah Jones, John Mayer, The Chicks (with Lloyd on Dobro),James Taylor and YoYo Ma. Very enjoyable so far.

Right on Craig. Lloyd's the "Man". You could tell that he's proud of his daughter, but you could also tell that she's proud of her Dad. Congrats to both of them.

The Joe Strummer Tribute including Bruce Springsteen, 'Miami Steve' Van Zandt, Elvis Costello was great. After the performance they panned to the audience and you could see Lloyd Maines giving a standing 'O'. I don't know how many of you know, but The Joe Ely Band toured with the Clash in the early eighties in the UK, in the last issue of No Depression, Joe Ely gives a eulogy for Joe Strummer which is very touching. Joe Ely said that Joe S. seemed to know more about Texas than him, but anyway, it was neat to know that Lloyd had real close ties to the Clash and he was there to celebrate a talented soul lost. There is a live album called 'Live Shots' that documents that great tour. I have a copy signed by guitarist Jesse Taylor, which I will treasure even more today!
Norah Jones walked away from just about everything tonight, which is great, she is very talented and Blue Note records finally scores. She's also a Texan!!!! Yeh Hah Go Norah!!

Congratulations to Norah Jones! 5 grammys for her first cd! This cd is awesome and she thanked the musicians many times!
I'd love to hear her on Country radio. She's got it! |

Lloyd Maines is a real icon. I love his steel playing behind the Chicks, too. Great work.
Boy, those Dixie Chicks are a real success machine. "Home" seems a work from the heart that even the Chicks didn't think would "Fly" (so to speak). And here it is winning a Grammy. Way cool. Reminds me of "O Brother Where Art Thou". I hope country and bluegrass keep a'comin up like this. The Chicks seem to have made a crossover to the mainstream without losing an ounce of country flavor or sincerity. I was hoping that Leann Rimes would do the same thing (she's still able, if it met her fancy).

Theresa,
She actually mentioned the musicians by name at the Grammy Awards from memory!!
How many artists can name thier session players by name from memory.....?? Hmmm?

I just noticed that of the eight Grammys awarded in the country category that five went to works that were all acoustic with no drums. They were projects by The Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash, Jim Lauderdale & Ralph Stanley. |

Tim,
I think alot of artist could mention the musicians by memory, but they don't! Norah showed class by doing so.
Steve,
Norah has steel on "Cold,Cold Heart"!
Not much steel on the "Home" cd, by the Chicks. It was nice having Lloyd thank the musicians also! |

The Chicks album has lots of Dobro, but what is great about 'Home'is the sincere sound of the record, no flash just great music, singing and playing. It shows that people will buy good music if it is done well, the same goes for Norah Jones. She even said that she never thought of her CD as POP when she made it , but on the Best Pop Recording.
I think if you feed peopel junk, they will buy it, but if they hear something good them will embrase it. These two records show that especially since Norah came out of no where on a Jazz label and then word-of-mouth sent it on it's way.
The chicks will again use steel, they've shown that on their first two records. Plenty of great steel playing on them and it's right out front where it should be.
Maybe Nashville will learn something rom these ladies, but then again maybe not

That's an interesting observation. Maybe people have FINALLY had it with the lame 80's drum sounds and heavy metal guitar solos which are so common on modern country recordings.
Hope so!

I used to play steel every once in a while with Norah around town before she got her deal. The first time I heard her she was singing backups at some bar gig. I heard this sound coming from her side of the stage that wiped me out ! She could sing the phone book and make you cry.
Why she knows her musicians so well is because she is one. She is easily as great a pianist as she is a singer. At a rehearsal one day she was just fooling around and took a chorus by yelling Errol Garner and then absolutely nailing his style. We were all laughing with our mouths hanging open so she took another one and proceded to nail Bill Evans. She can do all this while holding a conversation about a great deal she found at Walmart.
Just amazing.
The first producer of her CD is Craig Street who is a big fan of steel guitar.

I was told that Nora Jones is Ravi Shankar's daughter. (It must be in the genes) By the way, she was first brought to recognition by my favorite DJ, LA's own, Nic Harcourt, on Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW FM.
