Mind boggling Tele playing from Brent Mason here - the entire song "Hot Wired". I think I'll just leave my Tele in its case.

It's hard to tell for sure, but it appears that he's using a thumb pick -- interesting.

With the player that comes up, using the arrows on the right side, you can stop the action and go thru the video (no sound) frame by frame.

He is making use of all his fingers as well as thumbpick. I think I saw a quick foot slide in there as well while he was dancing around.

That boy sure can pick.

It's interesting to me how different players have different picking techniques. I believe that Jerry Reed also uses a thumb pick and maybe a finger pick, but I'm not sure about the finger pick. I think I read that James Burton uses a regular flat pick and one metal finger pick on his middle finger. Jerry Donahue uses just a flat pick and bare fingers. So, I guess there's a bit of everything out there. They all sound good.

Brent Mason uses a thumbpick and acrylic nails on his middle and ring finger which he uses for the majority of his playing. On fast runs he rotates between the thumb, middle, thumb, ring, fingers etc. The 1st finger of his right hand has the nail cut all the way back which he uses to get that meaty funky sound where you get under the string and pop it. He demonstrated his techniques on his Hot Licks Video instruction tape of which I have a copy. He has mastered the use of fingers with a thumbpick to get a flat picking style down. This man can play faster and cleaner than any flat picker I've ever heard. On the end of his video he breaks out a Gibson L-5 (I think) and proceeds to run through some lightning fast Jazz scales using the same technique. Although he's a short dude, In my humble opinion he's head and shoulders above every guitar picker in Nashville or anywhere else. The the undisputed king of strings in Music City..........JH

kinda reminds me of the rh position Buddy uses, crosspicking with thumb and middle -- but Buddy uses the index finger more. I didn't see BM use his index finger in the entire clip . . .

MONSTER PICKER, no doubt
