I'm hoping that one of you can point me to a Willie CD that has some of Jimmy Day's playing (or any steel for that matter). I've been trying the "random" purchace method but have been coming up "Maggies Drawers" (Marine Corps term for missing the target). The most recent CD I picked up was "Certified Hits"...great classic-slick haired-shaved Willie, but the one or two steel tracks are way in the background.

Thanks a ton...that is what I'm looking for. It's kinda like playing Mr. Potato Head...finding a favorite vocalist then adding your favorite musicians to the mix.

Smiley recommended the "Willy Nelson-The Early Years" 2 CD set. He also sent a very nice scan of the cover and inside of the CD case. 61 cuts plus a booklet...Wow!
I'll be looking for this one and will hopefully find it.

Well, I went to Tower Records...they didn't have it in stock but will try to find it for me I did find a pretty cool consolation prize though..."Willie Nelson and Ray Price". Buddy Emmons is on all the tracks and just burns, of course. Also includes Johnny Gimble and Grady Martin plus Willies' usual gang of suspects. Copyright date is 1980 so I'm sure some of you have heared it.

| James Clayton Day is listed on the credits on Willie's The Troublemaker album, although I haven't listened to it for quite some time and don't recall how many of the tracks JD is actually on. |

There's a video out there, but I can't remember the name of it. A live concert, I think in Austin. Jimmy plays on "Fraulein" and a couple of others, and Herb Remington also plays on a bunch of them. I loaned that tape to someone, and it hasn't come back yet. Can't remember who. Oh well.

willie did a series of "demo" recordings circa 1961 with very sparse accompaniment.
jimmy day is all over them. there are somewhere around 35 tracks total. sound quality is excellent.
these were not released at the time and are not duplicated on the "early years" 2 cd set of liberty recordings.
they were first released in the 70s and 80s on at least a dozen budget label willie nelson vinyl lps.
there are some cds out there with this material, but i never bought them since i had the stuff on vinyl. if you find the cds, they aren't likely to be identified as the demo recordings, so you have to be able to ID them by song titles, such as:
blame it on the times
i'm going to lose a lot of teardrops
the end of understanding
face of a fighter
a broken promise
is there something on your mind
the ghost
you'll always have someone
some other time
waiting time
suffer in silence
i feel sorry for him
and others.
in fact, i think there is a track "i didn't sleep a wink", on which i think jimmy does the singing.

During the late 70's Willie had an independent record label called Lone Star Records. Most of those cuts you mentioned were released on his Lone Star album called "Face of a Fighter". The line up is the early 60's circa Ray Price band with Jimmy Day. I had the good sense to buy that album about 22 years ago and it remains one of my all time favorites.
Another, more available record is "Shotgun Willie" on the Atlantic label. I believe that one is in print in CD format. It features 70's vintage Jimmy Day.
