Who fans should read this page on Pete Townshend's web site. Hard to imagine "The Who Unplugged", but it could happen.

Yes, yes, yes!!
I use earplugs when playing with an electric band, and also as an audience member, except *very* occasionally at a show if there is just an acoustic guitar or two. My wife, whose hearing is more sensitive than mine, uses them all the time, and even sometimes in the movies (she spent too much time hanging out in discos in her earlier days!)
Jeff Beck has very bad tinnitus, I understand, and Clapton is virtually deaf in one ear. And this quote is from the Acoustic Guitar interview with David Lindley (reproduced without permission, but it's on their website, which I guess makes it OK...
Do you have hearing problems?
LINDLEY Are you kidding? We all do. If you play at the levels we did for so many years, you’re going to have problems. There are some people who won’t admit it, but we all do. I warn the younger players, "We did the research, dudes. People are now walking around deaf!"

I also have high-frequency hearing loss from my years on the bandstand, and if I was a young musician just starting today I would probably use ear protecton.
But, it's now a catch-22 situation for me. The hearing loss already incurred precludes the use of ear-plugs because I can't hear well enough with them....so I must continue to lose more hearing to continue working.  www.genejones.com |
