Tommy didn't start Starday, that was Don Pierce's label in the late '50's. Tommy did get signed by Starday, though, and went on to be one of their major writer/producers. Another one of his big songs was Red Sovine's "Teddy Bear", which hit #1 on the Country charts in the late '70s, if I'm not mistaken. |

Tommy Hill also produced a lot of records in Nashville. Hill And Range Pub. was owned by Cliffie Stone. Jody. |

Jody, Wasn't Hill and Range owned by a couple with the last name of Aberbach or something like that?

Hill and Range Songs was organized in the mid '40s by Julian and Jean Aberbach. Later, it became The Aberbach Group, and included such member firms as Elvis Presley Music, Johnny Cash Music, and Ernest Tubb Music. I suppose they were swallowed up by some other publishing outfit, as I haven't heard of them since the mid '70s. |

Hi Guys, The reason I thought Cliffie Stone had the Co. was when I was working at the Jack Rhoades Song Factory in the early 50's, Hill And Range published a lot of Jack,s songs, and Cliffie was who Jack dealt with. Sorry for the error. Best regards, Jody. |

Tommy was a good friend of Johnny Bush's, and so I got to hang with him on several occasions and watch him work in the studio. He knew how to talk to musicians, and how to get the rhythm guitarist, pianist, and drummer to sync up for the perfect shuffle. He had a millions stories of the old days, and was a very cool hang. This is a sad day since TH was one of the links to the classic era of our music.

I was producing a session once at the old Starday studios and Tommy was there. I had Shot Jackson playing dobro on a couple of songs. The enginear kept telling Shot to stand in one place don't move in and out from the mike. Tommy stepped in and told him don't tell him how to play, he's been doing this since before you were born. Tommy knew the pickers and their styles. And he knew when not to say anything to them. Tommy was a great guy. Terry |
