Has anyone ever tried to play Steel Guitar Rag with a Bossa Nova Beat?
Would that mess up your mind or what?

No, but why not?
Also play it in a different key besides E.
If it sounds good, great!
If it doesn't, what have you lost?
It won't hurt to try.

Also, you can try modulating from E to maybe A and end in C or something like that. Experiment with it, it's kinda fun to just screw around with a song like that.

Check out the 'Country Guitar II' album by Phil Baugh w/Vern Stovall. Mostly instrumentals by Phil on his Gibson/MSA 6-pedal 6-string beast.
He does a version of "Panhandle Rag" renamed "Panhandle Boss" done in a bossa rhythm. It's great.
And Phil willdefinitely mess up your mind.
