He did that one last night. I met him and had him sign a CD liner I'd slipped into my shirt pocket for just such an occasion.
He did "Take Me As I Am", but nothing else from the new CD. I was surprised. I wanted him to do "Working for the Man and Me and You". That's the latest single, although I’d be surprised if it’s played on FM here. Oh, you might find fellow steeler Chubby Howard playing it on AM, up the road in Franklin, OH.
Local steeler Joe Adams sat in with the house band. There were several unpolished singer – to put it politely – doing their thing. Finally, a good singer named Jim McFarland took the stage. That allowed Joe Adams to shine a bit more on steel, as Joe plays regularly in Jim's band.
I told Gene that Gregg Galbraith was so proud of the new album that he posted news of the completed sessions on the Steel Guitar Forum before the release date and that we’d anxiously awaited the release; released on 9-11.
Gene sings as well as on his records. Puts on a great show and works the audience with humor and brief stories of life on the road and in East TX. His steel man, as was pointed out here, is Corky Owens-- a long time band member,. The others were fairly new to Gene’s show and they all put on a great show, despite perhaps some sub-par sound equipment; I thought the bass sort of washed over things just a bit. Great steel from Corky’s Franklin, top notch singing – fine fiddling too.
I'd forgotten some of the early hits like "Cowboys Don't Get Lucky All The Time", "Paper Rosie" and "While She's Raisin' Cane in TX”.
I wasn’t at the St. Louis convention a few years back when Gene was there, but now I can say I’ve seen and met another of my favorites. Great time!
