Mid or late 50's. I recall the melody to the words I remember, but beyond that.....
"A shoulder to cry on.
Is all you want from me.
Someone to tell your troubles, when you cry.
Someone you can depend on.
To always be around.
I am nothing more than just,
your old standby."
Anybody recall the tune? |

Sure...it's "Old Standby", by Benny Barnes. It's a great old song he had a hit on in the mid '50s. (I have the original version by Benny.) Incidentally, I just did a session for a local artist (Bob Plunkert) who covered it, too! |

"Your Old Standby" was also recorded by George Jones in the late 50's. That version has some beautiful steel playing which sounds a lot like Buddy Emmons ... Buddy, am I wrong?

Thanks guys. That's an answer to a 40 year old question running around in my mind.
With your posts in mind, I went to google.com and sure enough there were referances to the song, most being about Jim Eanes and starday records and one with ref to George.
Another was Motoya Kitagawa, a fiddler with a bluegrass site. Just tons of lyrics to bluegrass songs.
Finally, out of curiosity I typed in "Smiley Roberts". He too, is listed on google.
Amazing, this internet. |
