THE MARTIN GUITAR COMPANY HONORS GEORGE JONES WITH A LIMITED EDITION GUITAR
By Michael Simmons
In early 2000 [edit note: 2001?], the C.F. Martin Guitar Company will begin shipping a limited run of D-41GJ model guitars, a new instrument designed to honor country-music legend George Jones. The guitar will feature an abalone-trimmed top, heart abalone hexagon fingerboard inlays, gold-plated tuning machines, and a pearl inlay of Jones' signature at the eighteenth fret. The top will be made of Engelmann spruce, and the back and sides will be made of East Indian rosewood. The guitar is limited to an edition of 100, and each instrument will feature a numbered label signed by Jones and Martin CEO C.F. Martin IV. George Jones joins Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, and Jimmie Rodgers as one of the few country singers honored with a special edition guitar from Martin. Part of the proceeds from the sale of this guitar will go to the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, which is affiliated with the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the hospital that cared for Jones after his near-fatal car accident in 1998.
