..for a topic with some substance...I was driving home from work today with the song
"Hello My Baby" running through my head...
Hello my Baby, Hello my Bonnie, Hello my Ragtime girl..
Send me a kiss by wire..
Baby my heart's on fire..
If you'll refuse me, Honey you'll lose me,
Then you'll be left alone..
Oh, Baby, telephone..
And tell me I'm your own..
Music by Joe Howard, Lyrics by Ida Emerson, in 1899...101 years ago. Pretty racy lyrics for a woman of the Victorian era.
..so the question is, what's the earliest song that you know of that used the term "baby" colloquially as we do today, as opposed to an infant.....baby, baby I'm aware, of where you go..each time you leave my door... |

Part of the song is about the novelty aspect of that invention the 'telephone'..at a guess. |

Jason, the telephone had already been around here for 23 years in 1899...on the other hand, I guess there are parts of (fill in name of state, province or country here) where it's still a novelty.[This message was edited by Pat Burns on 26 September 2000 at 04:58 PM.] |

Pat Burns, this post is for you pal. Make no mistake about it, you may chuckle and think the telephone is a novelty to us jackpine savages up here in northern lower Michigan, but some folks do have 'em here and there. We know all about them telephones, yessir. Why, I even got me one a few years ago, hardly ever have to use it. Got to where it didn't work only about half the time, so of course I only paid about half of the bill. Then after awhile these two men showed up in a funny little old truck and they pulled 'er out, and even unstapled the telephone wire from the fence and rolled it up and took that too (the wire, not the fence). We may have had a few beers, I don't recall. Then they got stuck trying to get out my road, which served 'em right. They'd have been there until the snow melted next June if I hadn't a hitched onto 'em with my team and dragged 'em on out to the main road, out of the very goodness of my own heart. When I told 'em it ought to be worth $5 for the use of the horses and the wear and tear on the harness and tugs, they started in bi#chin' that they worked for the telephone company, not the bank and all that rot. So I told 'em why don't they just put the telephone back in then and let's forget the whole thing, or had they rather I drag 'em back in the ditch where they belonged and wait for spring to come along next June. So pretty quick back my road they come, unrolled the wire, stapled it back onto the fence, put the telephone back in my house, and hooked 'er back up. We may have had a few more beers, I don't recall. Then they got stuck trying to get out my road again. Good thing the harness was still on the horses. Are you beginning to get the idea? Yessir, us northern lower Michiganders may look dumb but we know all about them telephones, novelty or otherwise.
"Oh baby telephone, and tell me I'm your own..." Hey, what was this topic originally about anyway? Songs, babies, or telephones?
I'm sorry Pat, I just couldn't resist! Tim R. |

Pat, it may be a coincidence, but that's exactly the same thing my shrink says to me every time I have to go see him! He also warned me whatever I do, to stay off the Steel Guitar Forum because it could "rub off". Wonder what that means?

...It means he hasn't figured out a way to charge you for the time you're here, and he knows this is better therapy for free than he can give you at $120 an hour. |
