Winners of the Prestigious and Coveted GEORGY Award Announced at the 22nd Annual Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards Show
ATLANTA, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- We are pleased and honored to announce the winners of the prestigious and coveted GEORGY(TM) Award and induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame at last nights 22nd Annual Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards Show.
Trisha Yearwood -- Winner in the Performers Category, who burst into the
country music scene in 1991 with her hit single, "She's In Love With The
Boy", brought down the house as she performed, "She's In Love With The
Boy," "How Do I Live," and "Perfect Love." The Honorable Roy Barnes,
Governor of the State of Georgia presented the award.
B-52's -- Winners in the Performing Groups Category, a funky, retro and
zany group of performers who rocked the house in Athens in 1977. And the
house was rocking again last night as they performed, "Love Shack,"
"Roam," and "Rock Lobster." The Honorable Mark Taylor, Lieutenant
Governor of Georgia presented the award.
Michael Greene -- Winner in the Non-Performing Category as President and
CEO of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc. (NARAS),
is a veteran of the entertainment and communication industries. Michael
began his career as an artist and producer working with artists such as
Kenny Loggins, Lionel Ritchie and Kansas. Hall of Fame Inductee Joel Katz
presented the award.
Little Jimmy Dempsey -- Winner in the Posthumous Award Category, standing
only four feet two inches tall and using crutches all his life was a giant
in the industry as a performer and guitar picker. He was sought after by
some of the biggest names in the business to record, arrange and produce
sessions with artists like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roger Miller,
Brenda Lee and many more.
Former television personality Guy Sharp presented the award, which was
accepted by Little Jimmy Dempsey's son Tim Dempsey.
The show, which aired live on GPTV, hosted by Eagle 106.7 FM morning deejay, Rhubarb Jones, also honored the 2000 Music Scholarship winner Allison Jones of Augusta, Georgia, singing "Summertime." Our other 2000 Music Scholarship winner, Daisuke Yamamoto of Marietta, Georgia was unable to perform. Other performers during last nights event were: Comedian, Tim Wilson; Opera Singer, Emmanuel di Villarosa; Frank Sinatra Impersonator, Dakota; and Macon Guitarist Joey Stuckey performed a tribute to Little Jimmy Dempsey.
The prestigious and coveted GEORGY(TM) Award crafted by Tiffany & Company is described as a "work of art in itself," and is presented each year to new inductees of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame as a symbol of their achievements and significant contributions to Georgia's heritage.
