I was listening to Jerry Byrd tonight and was amazed at how much like a human voice his tone is. He can make the steel sing so pretty. I cant think of anyone who has a softer touch.

Think I'd better get a frypan and start to practice!!

IMHO, only two steel guitar players in history have the talent for actually becoming an extension of the singers voice.

You named one. The other one is of course the greatest steel guitar player who ever lived. Or ever will live. If you do not know who I am talking about you have not lived !

Sometimes when I listen to Jerry Byrd, I think "That's not possible!". I can see the slant positions in my head, but I just can't imagine anyone being able to execute them so flawlessly.

Highly recommended: Marty Robbins did two Hawaiian albums where he and JB co-wrote a number of tunes. Each song has a beautiful steel solo, and the tonal qualities of the entire production will melt you into your chair. Among my favorites.

Bobby, I have the lps and I also have the video of Marty and Jerry doing the songs.Great stuff!

I have a good copy of it that was given to me some time ago.
On it Marty and Jerry do songs from their two Hawaiian albums. Jerry uses a 6 string acoustic dobro tuned C6th. He ups the 2nd string to C# for Hilo March at one point.
It is great and displays Jerry's tone and technique very well.
I do wish he had used the Frypan or Rick
however.
This video has been talked about before on the Forum.
I should like to mention also that Marty does
an outstanding job on all the songs. The video is a very nice keepsake in respect to both artists.
