Opry recap June 24

I was a little upset and doing a weeks back reading to notice how much steel was on tonights show.
Despite not getting to see Dale Watson, it was a thrill to hear Pam Tillis will be the next member of the Opry. This was a ture surprize as my sources were guessing Brad Paisley or Chely Wright would get the nod.

I was so ****ed that Dale wasn't on the TV segment -- even though expanded to 1 hour -- that I came up to the computer when Pam came on. I did hear it though.

Like so many of today's popular artists, I prefer her earlier stuff; real country music.

One whole hour of organized confusion. I watched "COPs" but taped the Opry show so I could fast forward and not have to see what I didn't want. Especially that great country singer Jim Gomer Nabors.

I too wanted to hear and See Ricky with Dale.

What a great variety of entertainment at the Opry this past weekend. The crowd was so excited to get to see TV legend Jim Nabors. Billy Gilman really knocked the crowd out especially with his version of the Tammy Wynette classic, "Till I Can Make It Own My Own". Billy is very kind and it looks as though he is going to generate alot of record sales. Pam Tillis will be a great asset to the Opry and it was cool seeing Little Jimmy Dickens invite her to join. This Friday night, new Dreamworks act, Darryl Worley will make his Opry debut. Hes the real deal as far as tradional country and you might want to tune in via the internet or radio. His new release will be out next month and it is loaded with steel guitar. As I said not long ago, the Opry is as cool as ever and every weekend is such an event.

Sorry I missed it! Sounds like the opry is alive and kicking!! It's exciting to see very young and older acts working.

I don't understand how one can give criticism when one doesn't watch or listen.

I did watch it before I commented. I agree and accept the newer artist.The kid was real good I just am not into kid acts. The Opry has been moving forward ,I didn't see anything except the addition of Pam that moved it too far saturday.Why bring an act up from Texas and not spotlight him (Dale Watson)? They could have done better with an hour. IT'S jmho.

As I mentioned in a related post, why feature two songs from performers when one song would allow TV viewers to see a much broader scope of the talent that was available.

Other than not seeing Dale W. and Ricky, I felt the show was one of the better ones as of late.

Theresa, the fact that artists like Dale Watson aren't being played on the radio is the main reason that a lot of people here don't like country radio much. Dale is a great singer and songwriter. His CDs are packed full of first-rate material, all of it well produced.

I like the Nashville A Team for their music, but it seems to me that record company politics conspire to keep outsiders like Dale Watson on the outside. Alan Jackson and Vince Gill can get traditional songs onto the radio, but they live in Tennessee. Artists who live and record in Texas seem to have a harder time breaking into the radio market.

I don't intend to start an argument, though. I'm just making an observation from the outside. There may be forces beyond my limited view that dictate what gets played on the radio, and whose face gets seen on the televised portion of The Grand Ole Opry every week.

I only know that, when I go to the record store, I put AJ, Vince and Dale in the same shopping basket, and pay the same good money for them. If demographics is the key, why isn't Dale marketed in the same way as his contemporary competition, instead of being shuffled away from the TV cameras and radio hot lists? It's the same kind of music!

Don't hear any George Jones on the radio up here but I know who he is. Matter of fact, his latest CD, which your brother played some killer steel on gets no air-time here at all.
Like Dale, guess he is too traditional for most "new country" radio stations, much to our detriment.

I don't know the answer. I'm a fan and I don't hear Dale on the radio. I'm not familar with him at all, that doesn't mean he's not good.
I'm sorry he wasn't on, but to say Billy was bad because he took Dale's spot isn't good either. Theresa

The comments from Joe C and Mac L hit a bit part of this nail right on the head......
simply why two songs from each of Billy the Kid, Jim Nabors, and Pam Tillis??? I don't think cutting one or two of these back a song would have hurt the quality of the show, and would have allowed everyone a listen to one of the best artists to come out of Texas in a long, long time.

Mr Master Moderator, you're comments are dead on as well... the fact that DW has bagged out of his Warner/Sire deal clearly illustrates these dynamics currently going on -- the recording sessions that he cut last Sept/Oct for them are canned-up somewhere because they are "too country", while guys like me have a crisp $20-bill just waiting for a label to grab on and press it for him.... this "too country" bit just makes greater anticipation to hear his latest. - Neil H.

I never heard of Billy Gilman before now, but I don't see anyone in this thread saying he was bad.

I've been a Dale Watson fan for 2 or 3 years now. He's one of my favorite artists, and frankly I don't understand why I only hear him on NPR. I've bought mutiple copies of his "I Hate These Songs" CD to give as gifts, and they were well received.

I understand that the recording industry is a business that has to make money. Well, here I sit, a fan with money in hand, waiting for good new music to buy, but the only way I'll ever find a new Dale Watson CD is through my friends here on the Internet.

B0b You hit the nail square on the head, I have a music collection that use to grow daily. Now if I buy one cd a year it's something. I bought three this year. I am always looking to buy good availible Country music I like. I did buy the "Players" AJ's POp a top and Don Hendleys new CD.I am looking for Dale Watsons CD's haven't found any around. I will check out ET"s Record shop next time in Nashburg. schwish-POP A TOP again.

Folks we have to admit the Opry is just about the only TV option to see country acts anymore unless we are willing to stay up for the late shows.

We have confirmed that the powers that be in the Opry organization are noting our comments good and bad.

The best we can do is to make sure those folks keep up about the lesser known acts we believe deserve the nationel exposure
