First off I like the Buck & Merle stuff better than anything ever but as far as the new country stuff goes "IT AIN'T ALL BAD"! Of course there's Alan Jackson and George Strait which even the old timers like but here's some of the new ones I like, how about yours? I like Brooks & Dunn, in my opinion Ronnie Dunn has as much emotion and soul in his voice as Merle, George J, or any of the old guard. Everyone hates Garth, or do they? If you listen to his albums you'll hear more fiddle and steel that just about anyone else out there including a lot of the old stuff! As far as some of the tunes of the new artists which I really liked a lot were: "Wish You Were Here" by Mark Wills, "He Didn't Have to Be" by Brad Paisley, the new version of "Flowers on the Wall" (don't know the artist's name), "There Goes my Baby" by Trisha Yearwood also her record of "The Song Remember's When" which I think is one of the best songs ever written. These are just a few artists and songs of the new era. Do you like any or none of the new stuff?

I like a lot of 'em --several you mentioned-- when they first have a hit. But before long they are swung over so far to the pop side that I completely loose interest.

I've often mentioned Sara Evans, but I understand her country-to-pop progression will continue with her next (3rd I think) album.

I liked The Dixie Chicks "Wide Open Spaces", but was less engaged by their follow up. Still, I like them.

Others I like include Dale Watson !!, Daryl Singletary, Lee Ann Womack, Trace Adkins.

Just off the top of my head; Patty Booker, Heather Myles, Buddy Miller, and Dale Watson.

There's the Starliners {retro hillbilly Western Swing from Melbourne}, actually there's a few groups from down my way.
Maurice Frawley & the Working Class Ringos, Red Rivers & the Rocketones, Doug Mansfield & the Dust Devils...great stuff!

Then there's the whole Alterna-country thang, although I don't think they really count in your definition Jerry?
Sunvolt {spun off from the same group as Wilco, not as famous, but twice as good}
Giant Sand, Smog, Will Oldham, Lambchop, Blue Mountain, but then most of these groups have been releasing CD's for over half a decade so they aren't that new really..hmm.
The Starliners are new, came together around early 1999 I believe.

Does Lucinda Williams count? I don't really know what genre I'd put her in.

Dale Watson seems to be on everyones list, which is as it should be!.

Son Volt IS a tremendous band, but I guess they're more Alt-Country. (Wilco is great too, although I don't think either of them are as good as Uncle Tupelo, their "parent" band.)

I did a CD for a local guy here. Lanny Priester, the CD Title is "Traditional Country" and it has 12 hardcore country songs with a lot of them 4/4 shuffles. Lanny is an ex steeler and he let me do pretty much what I wanted on the session - and I probably had more influence on the arrangements than anyone else.

Unfortunately it's going to be released in Europe before it's released here. Not sure exactly when, as they just got the registration back from BMI for the songs.

I really like Dale Watson too but with the state of country radio he'll never get played until something changes. He has a 60's type Bakersfield sound and really honks with the best of them. Other acts in that vein are the Derailers and maybe the Delavantes. Country radio as it stands will try their best to keep those kind of acts off the air. What acts do you like today that get national air play?

The new stuff doesn't really deserve to be called country for the most part. "Nashville Pop" is more like it. You degrade the word and confuse the masses when you call the current radio fare "country".

As for new artists playing real country, I agree that the Derailers and Dale Watson are two of the best.
Others not mentioned yet are BR5-49, the Star Room Boys (great!), the Two Dollar Pistols, Freakwater, Hank Williams III, Wayne Hancock, and Junior Brown to name a few.

I like Dale Watson pretty dang good myself.

Mandy Barnett is good listenin! Brad Paisley, Daryl Singletary and I'm sure there are more but none come to mind at this time.

Oh, Ricky Davis....... you're just a slight bit biased when it comes to Dale Watson, right??????? hee hee hee.

Oh yes. Dale Watson is on my list too, in part due to the stellar playing of the aforementioned Mr. Davis.

The Derailers are great. I like listening for the steel on their records...... in fact as time goes by my ears just gravitate towards the steel when I listen to country both old and new.

First off, let me say: HAGGARD RULES AND KNOWS ALL! Having said that, some of the new guys and gals that are country. You know. The ones you'll never hear on the radio? My opinion's are as follows:

2-The Derailers
3-Wayne Hancock
4-Robbie Fulks
5-Heather Myles

Mark Chestnutt's first few C.D.'s were real good. Somewhere along the line he lost his marbles. "Don't Wanna' Miss A Thing"? Gimmie' a break!

Guy Clark is cool. Webb Wilder? Not always country but never phony. Whatever happened to Hank Flamingo?

David Ball. His CDs have some real nice tunes and fine steel work. (Does anyone know who played on his first album?) Good stuff IMHO .

The steel player on that David Ball album might have been Timmy Turlock, who plays bass in the acclaimed Jon Wayne band.

David first had a western swing record that bombed. I played on that one, maybe thats why? The album with "Thinking Problem" was Vintage Sonny Garrish all the way.

I don't know if you consider her "new", but I really like Patty Loveless. Great voice.

I like any artist that features the Pedal Steel Guitar. Amen....al

Paul, thanks for your reply. There were no musician credits on that CD (at least on the copy that I've got) and I really like the steel work. Nice job.

okay okay... gotta have my 2 cents worth.. but to be honest, the only country cd's i own are Shania (what was I thinking?) Trisha Yearwood, the Ranch (featuring Keith Urban) and yes, I know I know.. even tho he stood me up (lol) and everyone hates him (those that heard of him!)

I too despise Garth.. even tho I'm subjected to him daily.....

But..... fav... always will be... DIXIE CHICKS!!!

And, well, considering I vowed death to anyone who tried to make me listen to any form of country.. I think that's a good start!

Oh, and I guess I have to say my fav will always be Country Rebellion (giggle - wink @ Tony!)

And now I have to add Dale Watson and his Lonestars to the list I guess!!! (wink @ ER)

Brad Paisley, Dale Watson (I got to work with him one night in Austin years ago), Dale McCurry Band, Dixie Chicks. I also like & buy everything Shania Twain records, but, as I've said in other threads, she's definitely not country. Best, Boomer
