Does anybody know if he quit singing or what? I know he had as much soul in his voice as Lefty did, loved his singing!

I had heard ,a couple years back, that Allen was not going to work the road anymore. I was told that he was going to be producing, writing, and occassionaly going to Europe to do some shows, where he has a large following. You're right, Jim: he is a very soulful singer!

I agree that he is a fantastic singer. In addition, he is no slouch in the songwriting
dept., either. Sometime in the 1990's he recorded an excellent CD, _A Piece of My Heart_, that was a foreign label release. It was cut in or near Nashville. The steel players on the sessions were Perkins,
Jernigan, and Bouton. Never heard of them.

Thanks guys for the update on Allen. Yes we were all fans of Lefty, and how I got turned on to Allen, before Phil Baugh died I was at his studio doing a session, along about the mid 80's, when he played me some stuff he had cut on Allen, he had Buddy Emmons playing steel, and Phil was playing guitar and was some of the best country I ever heard. I remember one of the songs was called {Beer joint fever}. Blew me away! I could not believe the guy never got a major record deal. hell the Frizzel's invented country singing

Jim, Allen did a short stint on Columbia(Epic maybe), following the releases on Sound Factory. They just never could get him over the top. Allen did the harmony vocals on Keith Whitley's recording of "I Never Go Around Mirrors". Great recording! I believe he penned one of the songs on George's "Choices" CD. One of the uptempo songs. I know Allen had it on a CD, he had out on the early to mid nineties. George's version is almost the same, vocally, as Allen's. That in itself, says a "LOT" about Allen's singing!

I played fiddle with Alan and David last fall here in Missouri. Although this was the first I had met him, Alan was very gracious and I was invited to jam with them at the "band house" after the gig.....had a lot of fun listening to the stories about Lefty and Merle Haggard. They were supposed to return this spring, but events in my life have kept me out of the round of communications regarding this.....
