'53 Fender Champion lap steel

I just purchased cute little '53 Fender lap steel.
I play a '52 Telecaster, but know nothing about lap steel guitars.
Is there a beginner's type of strings to use, tunings, how to hold the slide, etc.
Please help me.
It's strange to have played for 35 years and have
to approach a guitar as a beginner.
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Dave Freden

Arlen Roth at Hot Licks has a new lap steel tape out. He's a tele guy, and his tape, tab included, will go a long way in understanding the same and not-same of lap and standard guitar. Most of the rest? ....

Hi
it depends on what you're after.....
I just switched from Telecaster to Steel guitars and it took some time but now it became an obsession.
Try this:
G .010
E .014
C .018
A .026
G .028
E .036
this is a C6th tuning which I found very easy to adapt as a beginner, good for western swing and other stuff
if interested I could post more tunings but I would recommend this.
Have fun !

Congratulations! If your lap steel is like mine, it's probably the Fender Champion model. These are GREAT sounding lap steels in my opinion, somewhat like an old Telecaster.
Check my web site for some suggestions on where to go, what to buy and what to do next.
