Are there some owners of this steel out there?
I am considering buying one of them. Would like input from owners- tone, quality of construction and materials, likes, dislikes. I live in So. California. Phone (619)748-2296 or answer on forum. Thanks

I saw one in St. Louis and thought it was a first-rate instrument. Really solid feel, great tone, sharp looks.

I have been playing one for about 4 yrs now and it is the finest steel I have ever had bar none and I've played them all since 1936. I bought mine from Scotty. He gave me a good deal but it depends on the exchange rate of the yen at the time of purchase. Keep your thumb pick hot!

John Tipka, a knowledgable forumite has posted high praise for this instrument.

On his recommendation, I had a hands-on with one at St. Louis. I agreed with his praise, but had difficulty with the placement of the rear pot - it was right where I naturally place the wrist on my picking hand. Otherwise I really agree with b0b's comments and John's earlier comments.

That's a personal thing of course, but I ended up trying and liking the 8 string Sierra lap steel so much, it kind of eclipsed the Excel. I just took delivery on it a few weeks ago.

So this is just one individual's opinion. I've got a lot of positive feelings about the Sierra, and will try to post some observations soon. Good luck on your decision. If at all possible, try the Excel out, you may end up really liking it. I did except for that one little thing.

Bob, the dlb 8 has the vol and tone controls on the end plate just as the pedal version. Are you refering to the frypan model and not the dbl 8?

CC, you're right, I was talking about the Frypan. Apologies. I mistakenly thought the subject guitar was the Frypan, not the double 8 which I haven't had the pleasure of trying.
Thanks for catching that.
