Update folks - Let me point out another minor mode which you might think sounds better than either of the ones mentioned so far (i.e. Dorian & Phrygian). It's called the Aeolian. It sort of combines the 'best' from the other two and is sounded by playing a G Mixolydian in the key of A minor.
