Here's slightly expanded way to voice the first four bars with four note voicings. This also employs the 4th string raise (A-Bb), which I used here in conjunction with the 6th pedal.

Rather than naming pedals, I use "b" to indicate a flatted note (half tone lower), and a # to indicate a half tone raise. Use whatever pedal or knee lever produces that result.

Here's what it sounds like (144k Mp3 file)

John, In your tab above, did you mean the second string raising with pedal 6 instead of the third?

Hughey plays it kinda like this: (in D, on the "on and off stage" album -no pickup notes)

4------|-----------------------|------|-2----
5--14--|-12--12(5-14--10~~10(5-|--7---|-2--2-
6--14--|-12--12---14--10~~10---|--7---|----2-
7------|-----------------------|------|-2----
8--14--|-12--12---14--10~~10---|--7---|----2-
9------|-----------------------|------|------

I like the pedal drop at fret 10, it's swingin'
Awesome sounding file, Jerry! wow... I'm impressed, the quality is A-1.

What would this part look like on a C6 8-string *lap* steel? (ACEGACEG tuning)

(I can figure it out if someone can tell me what the 10-string pedal steel C6 tuning is...)

dwayne: open tuning 10 string C6 for pedal steel grew directly from the non-pedal, is very much the same as you post... just the two lower strings generally; and some guys use a D on the top
