Great Speckled Bird"--August's FREE gospel tab!

Posted: 31 Jul 2003 9:22 am
by Erv Niehaus
Since we've been on somewhat of a bluegrass, gospel kick these last couple of months, I'm going to extend it this month with "The Great Speckled Bird". This great gospel song was originally recorded by Roy Acuff in 1936. The melody was resurrected by Hank Thompson and renamed "The Wild Side of LIfe". Not to be outdone, Kitty Wells responded with "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-tonk Angels".
The original lyrics are included with the E9th tab. For those interested, the Biblical reference to "the great speckled bird" is found in Jeremiah 12:9, depending on your particular translation. I'm sure you will enjoy learning and playing this great old gospel classic. So make your requests! It's sent out free, no strings attached (except to your guitar, of course). Image Image

Hi Erv, please include me for this month selection.

I think I read somewhere where you have tabbed out a lot of Gospel music, like more then you have offered here. By chance, would you have or would you consider putting together a book of tab. I for one would sure be knocking on your door to BUY it. Just a thought. Thanks again.

Erv, not that it really matters but, the tune that was used for the GSB was used by the Carter Family in one of their earlier recordings that was titled "I Am Thinking Tonight Of MY Blue Eyes". If you wanted to do a medley of tunes with this tune, you would include, I Am Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes, The Great Speckled Bird, Wild Side of Life, and It Wasn't God That Made Honky Tonk Angels. Thanks for the terrific response!!!

A message to P Gleespen and David Moore, I'll need your snail mail address as my tabs are sent out through the mail.

Kenny, that was interesting about the Carters. On the sheet music I used to created my tab, credit for "Great Speckled Bird" is given to a Rev. Guy Smith.

Roy, I suppose that I have tabbed out 50 or 60 gospels songs and am always working on more. I plan on attending the Steel Guitar Gospel show in Indianapolis next Spring and I am going to be offering a lot of my tabs for sale. The first tab will be for free and then a $1.00 a piece after that. It would be hard to put my tabs in a book because they are all different size. Some are single page some double page and etc.

To all those who have sent me e-mails, your tab it going out today also.

"Give praises to the Lord on an instrument of 10 strings". (Or 9 if you just broke your 3rd string!)
