Just got Registered version this week.

Just downloaded the demo - looks cool! Where can I find some .tef's to check out what people have done with it?

You'll find them HERE. You'll be able to hear arrangements by clicking on play. Click on the Print Preview to see a nice printable page.

There are also lots of guitar sites that feature Tabledit .tef files for regular guitar.

Just registered. This is a great piece of software with almost too many options for people like me. My head hurts!

Seriously, I'm trying to tab out my lap steel arrangement of Bud's Bounce and the biggest problem I'm having is trying to figure out the timing and how to notate it.
Even though it uses behind the bar pulls maybe I should tab it as if it used pedal pulls to sound right?

Andy, I would suggest doing lap steel tab in the standard 6 string guitar mode, i.e. not in the Pedal Steel Guitar mode. This will allow you to put "bends" in the tab. You can then add in text telling the reader to pull the string behind the bar. The tab numbers would be on the lines in that mode however, not in the spaces, which makes perfect sense for 6 string anyway. Click HERE and check my arrangement of I'm Confessin' to see string pulls on lap steel.

Try a simple "bend" and try a "bend and release". These are accessed in the SPECIAL EFFECTS box, under NOTES. Once you call up the SPECIAL EFFECTS box, you can re-access it by hitting "Enter". If you want to indicate a string pull in the tab, you will probably have to enter the fret number. Some of the special effects may not sound right in the MIDI, but they look right in the tab, or vice versa. I prefer have them look right in the tab.

To enter note values ( 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 , etc. ) the easiest way, click on DISPLAY and then PALETTES, and then NOTES. This puts the notes palette on the screen and allows you to work faster. It's also helpful to keep the TOOLS palette on the screen too. From TOOLS you can enter Text and set up repeats, etc. It's a good idea to click on the Print Preview every once in a while to see what your creation will look like. There are many options available in the Print Preview section, like spacings and adding stems into the tab, etc. Have fun.

It sounds like your asking if there's a an index of gifs. Not to my knowledge.

You need the Tabledit program to view and hear them. I don't see that as a problem since there is a FREE Tabledit viewer available for those that choose not to register. I have a link to the free viewer on that page.

Let me clarify ... I can write an ASCII tab in Windows Notebook and paste it here in a Forum message. My question is, if I write a Tabledit tab and want to post on the Forum, do I need to put that .tef file on a server somewhere or is there a way to just attach it to my Forum message?

It's a convoluted process! Here's an example:


Here's How:

1. In Tabledit > "FILE" > "PRINT PREVIEW" > "EXPORT..." > "PASTE TO CLIPBOARD AS BITMAP"

2. Open PAINT or a similar program. PASTE the image into PAINT. Modify/crop it as needed. Then save it as a gif file.

3. Upload that gif file to a web server somewhere.

4. Insert that gif file into your forum message using the [IMG] tags. (You can click on the Edit Pencil over this message to see how that is done.)

All that work and your reader still can't HEAR it! That's why I think it best to just send a tef file to EBB or me. We'll make it available. The only catch is the end user needs some form of Tabledit. A small price to pay, especially when the viewer is FREE.

Thanks for a straight answer! I get it now. If I can ever get the timing right I'll send 'em to you.

Timing is indeed the tough part when using this program.

It's not the programs fault. It's us.

When writing tab before, we were often not exactly correct with timing. We were close,and depended on our ears and memory to get it right. Now that we have a program that can play back what is written we are being forced to have the timing exactly correct.

I admit I'm also struggling with this. It's probably a good thing in the overall learning process, but is very frustrating in the short term.

Keep in mind that you can print your arrangement in TAB ONLY. Print Preview / Print Setup / Printing / Print Tab Only

The TAB ONLY mode is a quick, handy way for users who don't want to deal with notation to do up some tab.

The notes will still appear when you are composing (.tef) but just ignore them, as you wouldn't be printing them anyway. The measure lines will still be there, and you'll need to enter your tab into the right measures.
