Buckaroo

Subject: "Buckaroo" Does anyone do Don Rich's guitar part on the E9th neck? I can play it in several places, but that open D and open G string sound, on Don Rich's six string guitar, is hard to get on the E9th neck. Can anyone tab what Tom Brumley did on his ride? I think I am close. I think the key is lowering the 2nd string a half step. I wore out at least 10 albums of Buck Owen's Concert at Carnegie Hall. I got one album left and it is just about worn out.

Yeah Keith I tabbed that sometime ago along with many many others on the Rebel and Ricky site.
Here is the link to the page it's on> http://users.interlinks.net/rebel/steel/1965.html
I would give you a link right to the tab or put the tab here; but obviously you haven't been to the site. So get over there and get busy man.

Thanks Ricky. I hate to tell this, but I used to play for Bob Morris who wrote Buckaroo. Bob wrote many number one hits. When I had to play Buckaroo, I would just do my own ad-lib version. I would like to get it more like Buck's record.

Hey Ricky, at least I had the 2nd string 1/2lower right. Buck always did stuff 1/2 fret off dead center, notice the Key of C#. I bet that drove Brumley nuts.

Yeah Keith you did nail it when you said Tom was using a 2nd string half step lower pal.
Yeah Buck tuned down a half step; so when he would go to play a regular looking D chord on the guitar; Tom and the rest of the world had to be in C# to pick with him Image Image Image.
My boss tunes down a full step and I really like the way a guitar sounds tuned down. You have that more round lower register thing and of course you have anything high you need by going up the neck; but it also drives the rest of the guys that sit in>"Mad".

Based on all the open strings Tom uses, like on "Crying Time", I think the whole band tuned down a half step, not just Buck.

Tom has for certain tuned the steel to Eb9 for cryin time. And probably Buckaroo also.
The 2nd string is lowered a halfstep for the whole solo.

Palm-blocking is probably the key to play the notes in ( ).

This solo gave me loads of trouble 25 years ago when I tried to figure out how to play it on guitar. Only to discover later that he was not playing guitar at all. 10 years old I did not know there existed something like a Pedal-steel.

Here is tab for Buckaroo/in Key of D.

Yeah the whole band tuned down> "Except Tom Brumley".
Crying time is done in G# and Tom uses the open 3rd string(G#) as the open string as the 4th string is bared and moved. And the second string open is thrown in there at some point but can't remember without looking at my tab I tabbed on this one.
So Tom is not tuned down as them boys in the band played cryin' time in A position on their guitars; but in real time, it was Ab(G#) and that's where Tom got the open string(our third string mind you).
So as far as Buckaroo; I put the tab link up there; and I'll go ahead and put it here too if ya want to play it in the proper key on the E9th pedal steel and exactly the way Tom Played the solo part.

When I tabbed this I assumed the steel was tuned a halfstep down.

It is possible to play without tuning down using 2nd string and 1st string raised F# to G for the last part.

Ricky, the most interesting thing about what Brumley did, besides the great phrasing, was on the last line of the tab. Where he went up to the 5th fret is really interesting. No one has said a word about the six string guitar part and doing that on E9th. I always thought the guitar part was pretty easy on 6 string guitar. I learned to do that on 6 string guitar right away, and I wasn't even a guitar player. The 6 string guitar part just lays difficult on the E9th neck. The closest I've come is using pedals 2&3 on the 8th fret, starting on the 7th string D--Key of D.

Hey Keith; I agree about that last part Tom did; sounds great. It's basically part of the major scale, starting on the sus note or 4th tone.
As far as the guitar part on E9th steel; If I had anytime at all; I would tab it out for ya.
I'm in Houston right now at a Hotel somewhere and going into the studio Tomorrow and back home after that; but got a couple of Golf tournements; so I'm swamped.
I bet if ya ask nicely; my good bud Jeff Lampert would do it(simply because it would be a challenge to him) to do a guitar part on Steel. I can't think of a better ear for exact notes, than Jeff> he is "King".
But Jeff is quite busy too; but he can knock this stuff out without even sittin' at his steel(I have to have my steel with me)> "Go figure" ha...........

Gee! I always assumed Tom was always tuned to an Eb9 tuning. Every time I tried to learn Pedal Patter it was always a half tone off?????
