I'll Come Running

Post by Jon Light »

I worked some tab for this quite a while ago that, in retrospect, is embarrassingly bad. It had some glaring errors and some really dumb solutions to a couple of the trickier sounds. I have reconsidered it and this just might be close to plausible, sort of (he said with deep conviction). The sound clip is at

Jon:
If either of the two tab maestros (Ricky or Jeff) will have a look at this and give their critique, I will put this one up on the site in exchange.

Well it's certainly getting easier to play brother Jon. My Brother, play through my part below and see if that don't play easier starting on your third section above(12th fret)>and finish through the modulation. If that ain't it; mess with it and see if that's the string combination and pickin' pattern Weldon is using.
Yell back at me and see what ya think.
Great work on the tab Jon.
Ricky

Isn't this in "Pedal Steel Guitar - A Manual of Style"?
You can get it thru jimmiecraford.com. Click "instruction" when you get there.

Hey Mr. Ricky. I'm serious frustrated. I just don't know anymore. I've listened to this so many times--regular speed, super slo-mo, that I just can't hear it anymore. I've gone deef on it.
Like a mule (or is it an ass?) I still think there's more going on on that repeated descending bar than your tab says--I'm hearing a whole step on the two descending notes instead of the half step of your two notes on the 5th string.
The other stuff--your way is more logical. There is a distinct timbral difference between your choice and mine. I'm going to point to yours as probably correct and I'm going to probably keep playing it my way as a matter of personal preference.
I think I'm going to walk away from this and just go out on the streets and talk to myself.

Rebel--the tab on your site (mine) is simply bad. It really doesn't belong there or anywhere. It's wrong and it has some careless errors.

--Oh, and Ernie--yeah, after I had tabbed this here(a long time ago) it was mentioned that the Manual of Style book has this in it. It's certainly not my intent to undercut anyone's commercial endeavor. this was a personal challenge. I'd love to have that book but I'm not planning on buying it at this moment. I'd sure love to know how it compares, though--if anyone has it and could sneak a peak and tell me how this story ends, you know? <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jon Light on 29 January 2001 at 01:33 PM.]</p></FONT>

Jon my brother; your on it man.
Don't get frustrated; your only tabbing the very most difficult in execution solo in the world pal. Weldon may have used the second string as part of the triplet>I just can't play it; it's too hard and too fast for me to execute that. I can execute my decending triplet line from the 12th fret to the 10th fret thing; and so maybe that's the way I hear it(cause I can do it). Weldon was/is most capible of playing any pattern very fast and very clean; and that makes it sooooooooo hard to tab; because of my capabilities in execution. So all and all I'm saying that I'm playing that pass that way cause I can execute it and it works; and I can't execute any other way>"well maybe if I practiced more"(ha.......... Image
Please Jon you know me>don't take it so hard my friend and don't get frustrated. What you have tabbed up there pal; Plays great and is one fine tab work and will get anyone through that solo perfectly. I'd send that over to Graham and have him re-put it; cause it's that good pal.
Your work on that song is extreamly admirable and is as good as any I've seen on it pal>believe me.
Love ya.

Jon,
It's real, real good tabbing. I started listening to it, and it is very tough. I do feel, like Ricky, that the tonality at the end sounds sort of B/C pedalish, but what you have is the absolute same notes and phrasing, so it's 6 of one, 1/2 dozen the other on that. All in all, it's great, and stick it in the archives fast. Also, try tackling a few of the others if you can. We're looking forward to seeing some more of this stuff if you're up to doing it.

Ricky and Jeff both--mucho thanks for the encouragement. I didn't mean to come off like some kind of high drama.
Observing the tabbing that both of you do, it is obvious that you both have a fluency in the language. Myself, I can't even spend enough time to proof-read out the obvious mistakes--it's just too headachey for me to read tab. But every now and then I get a wild hair and next time I do you'll see another project.
Thanks again, friends.
