To "produce" a sound similar to Banjo
I use a cloth (scarf or light towel) and
place it across the 12th fret.
Everything that's been "picked" above sounds
banjo-like.

A good friend of mine, Steve Smith, who played once in my band showed me this little
trick.

Judy,,,,I don't really want to "sound like" a banjo,,,,,the roll type sound is very effective in various "Rags" and speedpicking. Com'on guys,,,,,post some tab!!

I think if -b0b- had his way, it would be thick naugehyde (sp?) and duck tape at the 12th fret!

Here are three typical banjo rolls as played
on the banjo. How you adapt these to the
steel is up to your own discretion.

Another one I like to play from time to time, is sort of a banjo type back up type lick.
Semi-mute the strings and go one fret higher than the pedals down position with the E to Eb lever engaged. In a fast roll, (to match the song tempo), play strings 4, 3, 2. I use it primarily to back a bluegrassy type fiddle solo in tunes like Rocky Top.

I just corrected my post, (above). I had it at the no pedal position. Sorry if I gave you a bum steer...
