Hi all, I'm working on Lloyd's version of Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town) from his Moody River CD. I have it all figured out except the 2nd verse. He does some chicken pickin stuff in the first 1/2 of this verse that I have figured out but I don't think I'm doing it right. Can anyone help me with this part...I feel like I'm overlooking something that will make it a lot easier.

L on 2nd string is a half-step lower (Eb to D open-strings)
\14 is a quick release of the A-pedal after I pick the note.
I use the lower on the 4th string instead of the 2nd string because I find it easier that way.
The fingering is underneath the tricky parts. (palm-blocking!)

Thanks for your trouble but the part I was referring to is in the first half of the song. The structure of the song before the lead breaks is:
Intro
Verse - Lloyd plays octaves to start this off
Verse - The 1st 1/2 of this verse is what I'd like to figure out
Chorus
Lead Breaks

The part that I am referring to is first half of the second verse.

That is the right part, thanks, I'll give it a try. I was playing it on the 7th fret starting on the 6th string but I thought that Lloyd's tone sounded like he was playing on the higher strings. Which would mean that he played it lower on the neck. I figured it out on the 2nd fret too but the picking sequence seemed to make even less sense to me in that position. Maybe that is why Lloyd is Lloyd and I'm not!

I came up with this. The "beat count", which is on line 10, represents the first beat of each 4-beat measure. "~~" means pedal slide and sort of jiggle the bar. Note that right past beat no. 2, there is a note played on fret 1. It sounds like it should be followed by another eighth note, but I didn't hear one, so that note on fret 1 is a quarter note. A couple of points on Lloyd Green. I feel, like many others, that LG is the premier E9 player of our time. IMHO, the reason for this is that he has an uncanny ability to play a simple chord or note line in various ways, often unconventionally. Sometimes he'll slide unconventionally, use unusual string orders, etc. This also makes him difficult to tab accurately. Based on this disclaimer, I think what I have is probably close. Yes it do sound like lower on the neck/higher strings.
It was a triplet move that sounded like a B-pedal that made me think 7th fret.
I think this one is closer. Did not encounter any problem-picking-patterns.

You Guys are Freakin' me out.
Amazing stuff here and ya'lls ears are great. Jeff and Bengt; ya'll are gunna have to break that tie somewhere How bout' a full on TAB off?
Like was said here; Lloyd did have a great Talent of playing a piece in many many different positions and figuring out where he played it is very tuff.

Yeah, I figured it out in that position too. Well I guess that confirms my fears. I'm gonna have to sit down and PRACTICE until it feels comfortable to me. I had the part figured out in three different positions and none of them felt as easy as Lloyd makes it sound so I thought I was just missing the boat somewhere. Thanks for all you guys' trouble. Jeff, I would definately agree with you, Lloyd IS the master of the E9 neck. I would love to get inside his head when he plays and see what he's thinking. He is a true genius. Seeing Lloyd in St. Louis this year was one of the greatest highlights of the 5 ISGC that I have attended.

Dave,
That's the whole thing with LG. What he does sounds easy enough. But the problem is if you try to do it EXACTLY like him, then you end up picking notes and chords in wierd picking patterns and positions. I feel most other great players do things that at least are bulit around what I consider to be conventional chord and picking patterns, so that at least it doesn't feel foreign when you try to play it. Even those first few notes on the open strings. Most players would play them on the 7th fret, so it would at least have a familiar feel to it and would be easier to play with some practice. With LG, you feel like you're learning something completely new. Also, other players seem to have patterns in their playing so that it you learn a few things, you can extrapolate on it and do a lot more. With LG, there don't seem to be patterns that you can build on. At least, I haven't been able to do it. All this is just my opinion, and I think anyone who can nail down the LG stuff should get a lot of credit, and I mean a real lot.

I must agree, Lloyd is truly a master on the E9. I have 7 CD's w/L.Green and everything he plays is just awesome. Both the slow stuff and the fast picking. I can play only bits and pieces of some of the songs 3/4 of the speed.
I just wish I could figure out some of the songs on the Reflections album.
