Once you find youself playing a dim triad any place on the neck you can move it up or down by 3 frets(minor 3rd) all you want. Just land in the right place and it works great.

Another way to do a similar thing is

This uses the four-note version (the dim7).

I usually add the 9th string in there too. There's a small temperament problem, but the chord is dissonant anyway so it doesn't matter much.

Here's one of my favorite E9 passages:

Amin7 D7b9 Gmin7 C7b9 Fmaj7 </pre></font>The second and fourth chords look a lot like diminished chords, but they make more musical sense as 7b9 chords.
