This is one of my favorite Robben Ford solos from his 2003 tribute to Freddie King (with ‘The Stumble” in mind, I would think). It’s well worthy of study for any instrument but has particular relevance for steel, IMO.

Robben’s elixir of arpeggios, blues, and Mixolydian tonalities is great and contains some killer licks. I have written the dots in A minor so the major 3rds (C#s) stand out. Significantly, this solo shows why the rhythm is just as important as the tones, with the placement of the phrases and their flow over the bar lines being a crucial element.

The transcription is somewhere around the mark, with a few rhythmic anomalies. Also, some things just aren’t possible on steel, and I have adapted, as little as possible, at some points. I play the head of the tune on E13, and the first chorus lays out quite well on that neck, but not so for the rest of the solo, which is written for A6. I hope that C6 players may also find some value here.

Here is the audio from the album “Keep on Running. https://youtu.be/D5O5uOtBiyo?t=128

I trust some steelers will find this of interest and possibly helpful.

Thanks, Guy! Good stuff.

I don't have my steel in front of me, so just to confirm, the first page is E13 (as noted), despite what the individual strings are labelled?

Whoops! Rookie file handling error. Thanks, Jim!

I run multiple tunings on my app to test things. I'll leave the A6 version of the first chorus here to show the difficulty. Maybe some neck hopping is in order.

My E13 tuning is Leon's, but with the 7th string tuned up to the 5th of the chord, a variation that Leon used occasionally.

Thanks! Wasn't busting your chops, Guy. Just excited to see some E13 transcriptions. I've also got your "Cadillac in Model A" and "Home in San Antone" that you did. Other than that, there's not a lot of E13 tabs out there.

Also, for anyone else interested, Guy's excellent transcription starts at 2:10 on the recording.
